Consulting: Definition and aim

Coaching remains a tool that helps clients develop solutions for a lifetime. Consulting is like direct advising. However, the difference between consulting and advising remains the level of expertise. Consultants are professionals who consult businesses and organizations as executive coaches more directly.  

A consultant is an expert in a subject matter; therefore, they can advise or collaborate with the client or the business only in that area. 

The similarities

You may think there would not be many similarities between these two. However, there are. For instance, both aim to help clients to achieve certain goals and overcome certain difficulties.   

Another similarity is - “questioning,” which both use as a potent tool to gain insights about the client and the problem. However, coaches use it, so that client themselves sees the bigger picture with all the details to come up with a working solution. Meanwhile, consultants need that information to provide reliable solutions.

The most significant difference is methodology. Coaching aims to assist clients and equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills (including self-awareness) to develop their problem-solving skills. Meanwhile, consulting is directly helping the client or teams to solve problems with no emphasis on mindset shift.

Difference 2 - Contacts

A coach usually works one-on-one or through group coaching sessions. Meanwhile, businesses usually hire consultants to work with the teams to achieve a collaborative goal or business-related objective. 

Difference 3 - Focus modes

Consultants focus on resolving a specific issue at a given time; that’s why organizations hire them. Coaches focus on developing clients’ EI, inner sense of self, and the right mindset. 

Difference 4 - Changes within

A consultant does not focus on behavioral change. Meanwhile, coaching's main focus is. Plus, coaching is extremely individual-centric. 

Other differences include the level of commitment; coaches need to be more committed to their clients and guide them throughout the whole way until they achieve the results. Meanwhile, consultants are committed to projects and project goals, usually have specific start and end dates, and work on contracts. 

Comparing with mentoring

Finally, let’s look at the main differences between coaching and mentoring, as those often get confused. The main difference is focus; coaching remains performance-driven, while mentoring is developed-driven.  

Another difference is that coaching is more structured and individual-centric, plus it can be for any aspect of life; meanwhile, mentoring is mostly implemented in business. Plus, mentoring tends to be in the form of more informal meetings. Meanwhile, coaching has scheduled days and times.   

Also, certain qualifications are required to be a good coach, e.g., some internationally accredited certifications. Meanwhile, to be a mentor, those are not a must.
