The following guide covers:
How did I evaluate and choose the LMS in the list?
Best LMS for small businesses with a tight budget
Best LMS for small businesses needing basic onboarding
Best LMS for small businesses with deskless teams
Best LMS for small businesses to test employee skills
Best LMS for small teams to train customers
If you run a small business, you probably do not have an L&D team. But when you search for "the best LMS," you get lists built for companies with 500 employees and a training budget to match.
For me, though, there is no single best LMS for a small business. Rather, the best LMS is the one for the job you need it to do. A 15-person agency onboarding new hires needs something very different from a retail chain training shift workers on their phones.
Based on my 4 years of experience in evaluating and reviewing tools, I organized the list by use case, so you can select the LMS that fits your needs best, such as for onboarding, budget, customer training, testing employee skills, training deskless teams, etc. Please note that the order in which the tools appear has nothing to do with ranking.
How did I evaluate and choose the LMS in the list?
When selecting LMS for this list, I score each one on a scale from 0 to 5 for each of the criteria below. 0 means the tool does not offer the functionality at all, and 5 means it is the platform's strongest point. That gives every tool a total out of 40. Each tool needs at least 26 points to be considered for inclusion.
The facts behind each score come from the vendor's own website and from verified user reviews on G2.
Here is what I look at:
- Course authoring and content formats. Small businesses rarely have training content in one neat format. It’s usually a mix of slide decks, PDFs, recorded Zoom calls, and maybe a purchased SCORM course. An LMS that lets you combine all of these in one course means you can work with what you already have instead of recreating everything.
- AI-assisted course creation. AI that turns a policy document or process notes into a draft course with lessons and quizzes cuts days of work down to an hour of editing.
- Enrollment and automations. When every new hire has to be enrolled by hand, training gets forgotten the week things get busy. Rule-based enrollment, reminders, and reassignments make sure the right people get the right training on time, without anyone keeping a spreadsheet.
- Progress tracking and reporting. Clear reports show who is overdue and which team is falling behind. They also give you proof of completion when a client or auditor asks for it.
- Mobile access. Many small-business employees do not sit at a desk, from retail staff and field technicians to people who simply prefer learning on their phone. A mobile app means training happens between tasks.
- Setup and implementation speed. Small teams cannot afford a months-long rollout that needs IT support. The faster you can launch your first course, the sooner training starts paying off.
- Engagement. Community spaces, discussions, and game-like elements keep people coming back. They also let colleagues learn from each other, which a team cannot get from courses alone.
- Support quality. I check what G2 reviewers say about support, not just what the vendor promises.
Here is a quick overview.

Best LMS for small businesses with a tight budget
I want to note that a tight budget does not just mean a low price tag. It means not paying for things you will not use, not outgrowing the tier you are on just because of the number of users, and not having to pay an extra price for the basic features.
TalentLMS
Key industries: Software, manufacturing, healthcare, consulting, financial services, nonprofit
TalentLMS is a cloud LMS built for growing businesses that want to launch training fast without an IT team. It covers employee, partner, and customer training in one platform, and for m,e its biggest draw for small teams is a forever-free plan. According to most of the reviews on G2, people usually choose it because it is quick to set up. TalentLMS mentions that most small businesses can launch their training portal in under a day.
Integrations: HubSpot, TalentHR, LTI 1.3, Zoom, Slack, Shopify, Salesforce
Why I chose TalentLMS for the review
What I like about TalentLMS for a tight budget is that the free plan offers enough to get started. You get up to 5 users and 10 courses forever, which is enough to pilot onboarding with a small team before you pay anything. And when you do need content, TalentLibrary gives you 1,000+ short, ready-made courses, so you are not paying to build courses from scratch.
What you may NOT like?
- G2 reviewers mention limited customization, especially for branding and layout.
- You cannot export your lessons in SCORM format, which some reviewers flag as a lock-in concern.
- Reporting can feel confusing when you need custom reports across several courses.
Key features:
- AI course creator (TalentCraft) that builds courses and assessments from a topic or your materials
- Learning paths for employee, customer, and partner training
- Branches to run separate training spaces for teams or clients from one account
- Automations for enrollments, reminders, and certificate renewals
- Mobile app with offline access
What do other users think?
G2 rating: 4.6/5 from 813 reviews
Most reviewers praise how easy TalentLMS is to use and set up, and many mention helpful support. On the other hand, the most common complaints are limited customization and missing features like SCORM export. One education lead summed up the main appeal in a few words:
“Ease of use is there; it is relatively easy to navigate (as soon as you figure out that you need to switch roles based on what you are doing). Adding courses is really easy; just drag and drop files. TalentLMS supports SCORM as well as standard file formats. There is a free version to test and see if it is for you.

Moodle
Key industries: Corporate training, vocational training, higher education, K-12
Moodle is the open-source LMS with 20+ years behind it. You can download and host it yourself for free, use Moodle's own hosted version (MoodleCloud), or get Moodle Workplace, the corporate edition, through a certified partner. People choose it when they want full control over their platform and their data, and do not want a license fee. However, I have to be honest. You will still need to pay for hosting, maintenance, infrastructure, and spend the resources of your IT team to maintain it.
Integrations: 2,000+ open-source plugins and Moodle-certified integrations; Zoom, Microsoft tools, Panopto, and Turnitin
Why I chose Moodle for the review
What makes Moodle different from every other tool here is that you own it. There is no vendor deciding which features go into which tier. If you need certificates with multiple digital signatures or a custom report, a developer can build it, and the plugin directory probably already has something close. For a small business with a tech-savvy person on staff, that is a lot.
What you may NOT like?
- The admin side has a steep learning curve. G2 reviewers often say you need someone technical to run it well.
- The interface can feel dated and cluttered compared to newer tools.
- On MoodleCloud, you cannot install extra plugins.
Key features:
- Quizzes, assignments, forums, workshops, and rubrics out of the box
- SCORM and xAPI support
- Competency frameworks and learner analytics
- 2,000+ plugins for certificates, payments, webinars, and more
- Multi-tenancy on Moodle Workplace
What do other users think?
G2 rating: 4.1/5 from 448 reviews
Reviewers love Moodle's flexibility and the huge community behind it. Yet the same reviewers warn that setup and administration take real technical effort. One small-business IT manager put it this way:
“Moodle has a wide range of functionality providing SCORM compliance, quizzes, completion data, badges, lessons, books, etc. It is relatively easy to install and has an active support forum”

Uteach
Key industries: Financial services, retail, hospitality, training centers
Uteach is an all-in-one LMS for businesses that want to onboard, train, and test employees, and also run training for customers or partners under their own brand. It combines a course builder, live sessions, coaching, community, quizzes, certificates, and a mobile app in one platform. People choose it when they are tired of paying for and stitching together several separate tools.
Integrations: API, SSO, Zapier, Make, Pabbly, HubSpot, Slack, Stripe, Mailchimp, MailerLite, Pipedrive, Google Analytics
Why I chose Uteach for the review
What I like about Uteach for a tight budget is that you can combine different training formats within the same learning journey. A new hire can watch a self-paced module, join a live workshop, book a 1:1 coaching slot, and post a question in the team community, all in one place. For a small business, that means one subscription instead of a course tool, a calendar tool, a webinar tool, and a community tool.
What you may NOT like?
- It does not currently support gamification such as points or leaderboards.
- G2 reviewers say a few workflow settings take time to set up at first.
Key features:
- AI support for building courses and training
- Live sessions, workshops, and 1:1 coaching with Google Calendar sync
- Quizzes, final tests, and automatic certificates
- Drip scheduling, deadlines, and automated reminders
- White-label academy on your own domain
Pricing: Uteach has flexible pricing and does not force you to pay for 100+ users when you have 30 employees. To get pricing for your team’s needs, request a quote.
What do other users think?
G2 rating: 4.2/5 from 31 reviews
Most reviewers highlight how easy it is to launch and manage training, and many mention responsive support.
“Uteach gave us a practical way to organize learning experiences for different audiences without creating separate systems for each one. We also like how quickly we can publish and update content. Since our product evolves, training materials need to be updated very quickly. Our team can make updates immediately and know customers are always seeing the latest information”.

Best LMS for small businesses needing basic onboarding
If your goal with LMS is to help the new hires get training independently, cut costs, and make it measurable, then you can consider the following LMS for your business.
Trainual
Key industries: HVAC, plumbing & electrical, construction, law firms, real estate, automotive repair, SaaS, and professional services.
Trainual is a training, operations, and performance platform for growing companies. I would say it is more of a living company playbook, since it is not a traditional LMS. You document how work gets done, assign it by role, and track who has completed it. People choose it when their biggest problem is that processes live in people's heads.
Integrations: HR and payroll system sync, SSO, and messaging apps
Why I chose Trainual for the review
What sets Trainual apart is that training is tied to roles and responsibilities, not just courses. You map who owns what on a living org chart, connect each role to the training it needs, and when a process changes, you update it once and Trainual reassigns it to the right people with a new deadline. I think for a growing team where roles shift every quarter, that is exactly the kind of onboarding that does not go stale.
What you may NOT like?
- G2 reviewers mention organizational difficulties with course assignment and hierarchy, plus formatting issues.
- It works best as a playbook. But if you need formal certifications or SCORM-heavy courses, you can consider other options on our list.
Key features:
- Process docs & SOPs with AI drafting and hundreds of templates
- Role-based onboarding and training paths
- Tests and e-signatures to confirm employees understood what they read
- AI assistant that answers questions from your company knowledge
- Completion tracking with overdue alerts
What do other users think?
G2 rating: 4.7/5 from 1,087 reviews
Ease of use is by far the most common praise. The reviewers think the design is intuitive for onboarding processes. Some users wish search worked better.
“Trainual is awesome because it allows you the ability to digitize your training for new employees. My company is a new company, and we had no official training in place, so you can expect that our onboarding process was rough for new employees. We came across Trainual, and we are so glad that we did.

360Learning
Key industries: Retail and luxury, manufacturing, technology
360Learning is an AI-driven LMS built around collaborative learning. What I like about it is the approach to training. Instead of a central team writing every course, the people who know the job can build the training. It is true that the platform is suited for enterprise-grade use. But it offers pricing for teams under 100 members as well.
Integrations: Workday, SAP, BambooHR, Slack, Salesforce, Oracle, and 80+ more;
Why I chose 360Learning for the review
What I like about 360Learning for onboarding is that it lets your subject-matter experts build the onboarding content themselves with its AI Content Builder. Your best salesperson or shift lead can turn what they know into an interactive course, and you still approve it before it goes live. Pair that with HRIS integrations that auto-enroll new hires, and onboarding starts without anyone remembering to send a link.
What you may NOT like?
- Many advanced features sit behind Business and Enterprise plans.
- Some reviewers note it takes time for admins to learn the platform.
Key features:
- AI Content Builder for subject-matter experts
- AI Companion that personalizes content and answers learner questions
- Skill-gap detection and course recommendations
- Automated compliance training and re-certification
- Mobile app for desktop and on-the-go learning
What do other users think?
G2 rating: 4.6/5 from 651 reviews
Reviewers praise 360Learning's ease of use, easy course creation, and customer support. The most common drawback is that some features feel limited. One reviewer pointed to what matters most in onboarding:
“What we appreciate the most is the ease of use of the platform for the trainer but also for the learner. The back office and module creation are simple and this makes the organization of our content fast and efficient”.
G2 Reviewer
Continu
Key industries: Financial services, SaaS, healthcare, manufacturing, hospitality, retail, dental
Continu is an AI-powered learning platform for employee training, partner enablement, and customer education. Its standout piece is Eddy, an AI learning agent that brings answers and training into the tools people already use. You can choose Continu when you want onboarding to happen in the flow of work instead of in yet another portal.
Integrations: Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, Salesforce
Why I chose Continu for the review
What is different about Continu is where the onboarding happens. Eddy delivers answers and training directly in Slack, Microsoft Teams, and even SMS, with cited answers pulled from your own knowledge base. It makes learning on time and easier.
What you may NOT like?
- G2 reviewers mention navigation issues and limited reporting options.
- May take a bit longer to implement than the other platforms we discussed on this list.
Key features:
- Eddy, the AI learning agent for Slack, Teams, and SMS
- Learning tracks and journeys for structured onboarding
- Smart segmentation to assign training by role, team, or location
- Badges and certificates
Pricing: Available on request.
What do other users think?
G2 rating: 4.6/5 from 727 reviews
Users consistently highlight how easy Continu is to navigate and set up, and many mention progress tracking. On the flip side, reporting and search come up in the complaints. One member-support reviewer liked the nudges:
"It sends me reminders on Slack when something needs completion."
G2 Reviewer, Member Support
Best LMS for small businesses with deskless teams
For the deskless teams, training has to live on their phone, take a few minutes, and fit around the schedule. Both tools below are built for exactly that reality, just at different scales.
Connecteam
Key industries: Retail, food & beverage, and other deskless industries
Connecteam is a mobile-first workforce app for deskless teams. Training is one hub inside a bigger app that also covers scheduling, time tracking, tasks, chat, and HR. You can choose iif you want one app for your frontline staff training.
Why I chose Connecteam for the review
What I like about Connecteam is that training sits in the same app your team already opens to check their shift and clock in. You do not have to convince your team to use the LMS. And the AI course creator turns a topic into a full multi-section course in seconds.
What you may NOT like?
- It's not a dedicated LMS, so G2 reviewers often mention missing features and limited customization.
- Reporting and advanced admin functions feel limited to some reviewers.
- Several reviewers say the free plan's user limits push you to a paid plan quickly once your team grows.
Key features:
- AI course creator for mobile courses
- Courses with videos, PDFs, forms, quizzes, and surveys
- Trackable records of mandatory courses and certifications
- Knowledge base and AI agent for instant answers from your resources
- Scheduling, GPS time clock, and team chat in the same app
What do other users think?
G2 rating: 4.6/5 from 3,506 reviews
With over 3,500 reviews, ease of use dominates the praise. But also most reviewers mention it lacks advanced customization features.
"The app is super easy for staff to navigate."
G2 Reviewer, Billing Manager
Schoox
Key industries: Restaurants, retail, hospitality, healthcare, manufacturing, construction
Schoox is a learning and growth platform built for frontline businesses, especially multi-location ones. It combines onboarding, compliance, certifications, skills, and career paths, and connects training to operational results. You can choose it if you need the same training standard across many stores or sites.
Integrations: ADP Workforce Now, Paylocity, Dayforce, UKG Pro, Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, Okta, Microsoft Teams, Go1
Why I chose Schoox for the review
What stands out about Schoox is how it handles training across locations and roles. Auto-assignment rules enroll people in the right courses the moment they are hired or move into a new role, and the hierarchy lets each location manager control their own team while you keep central visibility. For a franchise or a small chain, that is the difference between one consistent standard and every store doing its own thing.
What you may NOT like?
- Some reviewers note helpful features cost extra
- G2 reviewers want better reporting and more customizable dashboards.
Key features:
- Auto-assignment by role, hire date, or location
- Mobile app with offline access for frontline staff
- On-the-job training and skills tracking
- Certifications and compliance training
- Branded academies for different brands or business units
What do other users think?
G2 rating: 4.7/5 from 57 reviews
Customer support is the most praised part of Schoox in its G2 reviews, along with an intuitive learner experience. Reporting is the most common complaint. An L&D manager described its core value simply:
"Schoox makes it easy to disseminate training, allows self-paced learning."
G2 Reviewer, Manager of Learning & Development
Best LMS for small businesses to test employee skills
When you see for example 100% completion rate, you understand the course effectiveness. But it is not enough to understand who can actually do the job. If you need proof of skill, whether for safety, compliance, or simply to assess the team, consider the following options.
Cloud Assess
Key industries: Mining, construction, healthcare, and training organizations
Cloud Assess is an assessment-first training and compliance platform for frontline workforces in high-risk, high-compliance industries. Its focus is on proving competency, not just recording course completions.
Why I chose Cloud Assess for the review
What makes Cloud Assess different for me, is that it marks actual competency checks. So, instead of only multiple-choice quizzes, assessors can use observation checklists, logbooks, and formal verifications of competency, delivered on mobile. Everything feeds into a live skills matrix by role and site, so you can see at a glance who is cleared to operate which equipment.
What you may NOT like?
- G2 reviewers mention occasional technical glitches and slow loading.
- Some reviewers mention the interface customization is limited.
Key features:
- Observation checklists, logbooks, and formal verification of competency
- Mobile-first assessments with offline capability
- Skill- and competency-based assessment types
- Live skills matrix mapped to roles, sites, and departments
- AI tools for building and marking assessments
What do other users think?
G2 rating: 4.7/5 from 50 reviews
Reviewers consistently mention ease of use and fast, helpful support. Technical glitches are the most common complaint. One reviewer summed up the learner side:
“Easy to use. Saves time because it is efficient and easy to check on what has been completed and what is still left to do”.
G2 Reviewer
Easy LMS
Key industries: Product training teams, franchises, training providers, consultancies
Easy LMS is a lightweight LMS built around reusable courses and exams. You can organize learners into groups per client or location, deliver training through branded portals, and track results on visual dashboards. If you also need predictable, flat pricing, Easy LMS can be your option.
Why I chose Easy LMS for the review
What I like about Easy LMS is that exams are a first-class feature. You build an exam once, reuse it across groups per client or location, and see results in a dashboard. And because pricing is a flat monthly fee rather than per learner, testing your whole team or a batch of job candidates does not make the bill jump.
What you may NOT like?
- Users think the reporting is limited. Tracking and comparing completion progress across employee groups lacks visibility.
- API access and some essential features are on higher-priced tiers.
Key features:
- Reusable courses and exams in one place
- Groups organized per client, team, or location
- Branded learner portals
- Visual dashboards to track progress and results
- Available in 20+ languages
Best LMS for small teams to train customers
Training customers is a different game from training employees. Customers don't have to log in. So the platform has to look like your brand, feel polished, and often handle payments or access for different client groups. These two tools are built with that outside audience in mind.
LearnWorlds
Key industries: Training businesses, corporate education, paid learning and academies
LearnWorlds is an online course platform and corporate LMS for training businesses that run several programs from one setup: branded academies, customer training, client programs, and paid courses.
Integrations: HubSpot, Stripe, PayPal, Zoom, Microsoft Teams
Why I chose LearnWorlds for the review
What I like about LearnWorlds for customer training is how it handles many audiences at once. You can set up user groups, roles, access rules, certificates, and ecommerce so each client program behaves differently, while you maintain one core course. Add interactive videos with embedded questions, and customer training stops feeling like a folder of help docs.
What you may NOT like?
- G2 reviewers mention limited features around payment options and user management.
- Some reviewers find it expensive when you move to higher plans.
- A few reviewers miss key integrations or bulk-edit options.
Key features:
- Branded academies with your own domain
- Interactive video with in-video questions
- AI tools that turn existing materials into course content, assessments, and emails
- Ecommerce, user groups, and seat-based access for client programs
- Scheduled reports and certificates
What do other users think?
G2 rating: 4.7/5 from 391 reviews
Reviewers rave about LearnWorlds' customer support and ease of use. One reviewer captured the all-in-one appeal:
"Having our website, eCommerce and eLearning platforms all in the same place is unbeatable."
G2 Reviewer
Thinkific
Key industries: Academies, experts, and businesses that sell or deliver online learning
Thinkific is a learning commerce platform where courses and community come together. It helps businesses create and sell online learning, build communities around it, and grow revenue from one platform.
Why I chose Thinkific for the review
What sets Thinkific apart is that it treats customer training as a product. Courses, communities, and checkout live together, so you can offer free onboarding to new customers and sell advanced certification courses from the same place. If you are a small SaaS or services company thinking about turning your know-how into a revenue line, that is a practical starting point.
What you may NOT like?
- G2 reviewers mention they need more advanced reporting features.
- Other reviewers want more customization options.
Key features:
- Course builder with quizzes and assessments
- Communities built into the course experience
- E-commerce for selling courses, bundles, and memberships
- Learning paths and course access management
- Thinkific Plus for larger customer education programs
What do other users think?
G2 rating: 4.5/5 from 405 reviews
Users consistently praise Thinkific's ease of use and responsive support. On the other hand, SCORM and reporting gaps come up most in the criticism. One reviewer liked how quickly you can get a course out:
"I really like how intuitive the product creation flow is."

Real cost for a typical small team
Quick answer: Most LMS platforms on this list will cost you $500 to $3,000 a year for a 25-person team if you pay annually. That is around $2 to $10 per user per month. If your team has 10 people or fewer, you might even find a free plan that works for you.
But do not take the advertised price at face value. Some platforms charge based on registered users, others on active users, and some features are only available on more expensive plans. Monthly billing can also cost you more than paying for a year upfront.
To compare the prices fairly, I checked what each platform would cost for the same setup: 25 users, billed annually.
| Platform | How it prices | Cost for 25 users per year | Per user per month |
| MoodleCloud (Starter) | Flat, up to 50 users | $160 | ~$0.53 |
| Connecteam (HR & Skills hub, Basic) | Flat per hub, first 30 users | $348 | ~$1.16 |
| Thinkific (Basic) | Flat plan | $480 | ~$1.60 |
| Easy LMS (Basic) | Flat, capped by monthly exams and course starts | $800 | ~$2.67 |
| LearnWorlds (Pro Trainer) | Flat plan | $948 | ~$3.16 |
| TalentLMS (Core) | Flat, up to 40 users | $1,428 | ~$4.76 |
| Thinkific (Grow) | Flat plan | $1,968 | ~$6.56 |
| 360Learning (Team) | $8 per user, up to 100 users | $2,400 | $8.00 |
| LearnWorlds (Learning Center) | Flat plan | $2,988 | ~$9.96 |
| Uteach, Trainual, Continu, Schoox, Cloud Assess | Quote-based | On request | On request |
Where small teams actually land
Free ($0)
It exists, but it is narrow. Connecteam is free for up to 10 users, and TalentLMS is free for up to 5 users and 10 courses. That is enough for a very small team or a proper test run, but not enough to train a growing team.
Under $500 per year.
This band looks like the best deal, and sometimes it is. Yet each option comes with a condition:
- MoodleCloud’s Starter plan is cheap because it gives you Moodle without custom plugins. Self-hosted Moodle has no license fee, but you pay for hosting, updates, and someone’s time to maintain it.
- Connecteam’s low price covers one hub. If you also want scheduling or chat, each hub is billed separately.
- Thinkific’s Basic plan is built for selling courses, not for internal training.
$500 to $1,500 per year.
This is where most small businesses buying an internal training LMS end up. TalentLMS Core, Easy LMS Basic, and LearnWorlds Pro Trainer all sit here. The key question in this band is how full your plan is. TalentLMS Core covers up to 40 users for the same $1,428. With 25 people, you pay about $4.76 per seat.
$1,500 to $3,000 per year.
Here you are mostly paying for extras, not for the LMS itself. White-label branding, advanced reporting, automations, and per-user pricing that scales with every hire all push costs into this range.
FAQ
- What is an LMS for small businesses?
An LMS (learning management system) for small businesses is software that lets you create, assign, and track training in one place, without a dedicated L&D team or IT support. So you do not build courses through shared drives or chat threads. With the LMS, you build courses once, assign them to the right people, and see who has completed what.
The difference from an enterprise LMS is mostly about fit. A small-business LMS should be quick to set up, priced for a team of 20 rather than 2,000, and simple enough to run in a few hours a week.
- What features should an LMS for small businesses have?
At a minimum, look for these:
- Easy course creation with mixed formats like video, PDFs, and quizzes, ideally with AI help to draft content
- Automated enrollment and reminders, so new hires get the right training without anyone sending links manually
- Progress tracking and simple reports that show who is overdue at a glance
- Quizzes and certificates to confirm people actually understood the material
- Mobile access, especially if part of your team doesn't work at a desk
- Integrations with the HR, communication, and payment tools you already use
Beyond that, the right features depend on your use case. If you train customers, branding and ecommerce matter. If you work in a regulated industry, look for competency evidence and re-certification.
- How are LMS priced?
LMS platforms usually follow one of four pricing models:
- Free or open-source. Moodle is free to self-host, and TalentLMS has a free plan for up to 5 users and 10 courses. The hidden cost is often time, either for setup or for working within the limits.
- Flat monthly tiers. You pay one price for a plan with a user cap, like TalentLMS (from $119/month) or Easy LMS (from €70/month). This is predictable for small teams.
- Per user per month. You pay for each learner, like 360Learning's Team plan at $8 per user per month and Uteach plans. Costs grow with headcount.
- Quote-based: Trainual, Continu, Schoox, Cloud Assess, and Uteach share pricing on request, as different teams need different solutions.
When you compare prices, do not stop at the entry plan. Check the plan you'd need in 12 months, plus extras like branded mobile apps, white-labeling, or implementation fees.
