How to Design Course Completion Certificates and Offer Automatically

So, you are done with building your online course, and feel proud of every module.

One tiny but mighty detail you are missing? Your course completion certificates. The one that your students can post on LinkedIn, show to their boss, or simply feel proud of earning.

To create that, you could just grab a generic template, type in a name, and call it a day. But your course is not generic, so why should your certificate be?

That is why I suggest you read this article till the end to find out some design tricks that will make your certificate stand out, and how you can create one and automate offering certificates.

Spoiler alert: You can use Uteach’s ready-made certificate templates or build your own design with Uteach. Let’s get into the details.

Key considerations when making certificates

This guide is here NOT just to help you pick those fancy-looking templates you see on the internet, fill in a student’s name, and that is it. It is there to help you design a course completion certificate that, if someone sees a student sharing on social media, they immediately recognize your school.

To design a certificate for your course, you would need to choose your tools, include your school branding elements, and make it look legit. So, here is how to achieve that.

Choose a tool with certificate templates

Assuming you are not a professional designer (though pros look for templates, too), you would need tools that make designing feel less scary. That is why you can consider my favorite tools when it comes to designing certificates and not only.

  • Canva, which I did not even need to mention. The best thing about it is that you can find hundreds of certificate templates for free and customize them easily.
  • Certifier would be a great alternative for Canva, if you also want to manage sending your certificate to students. Here, you can create your own design or pick any of the ready-made templates to get started. When the design is ready, you can upload the students’ names and data in a CSV file to send easily.
  • Picktochart is another tool where you can create infographics, reports, and presentations. It also happens to offer an AI tool to generate the certificate instantly.
  • Uteach is an all-in-one platform for you to create and sell courses, digital products, coaching, and more. So it also has a built-in certificate generator

The best thing about Uteach is that you will not need much manual work if you need to award completion certificates to, let’s say, 100 students at once. In a little while, we will discuss how you can create and manage the certification more easily with Uteach.

Decide on the colors

When it comes to choosing colors, of course, you want to stick to the ones you chose for your brand palette. And if you want your certificate to also look professional, we will consider the color theory.

Many designers, including the ones who shared their thoughts on discussion forums, suggest keeping it to 3 colors. Where one is your primary brand color, the second is the darker/lighter version of your primary color, and the third is the accent color.

And if you want to achieve visual balance between those three, you can apply the 60/30/10 rule. This is the ratio based on which you can decide how much of which color you should include.

To make your certificate design look better, you can create the palette with Cooler’s palette generator and see what works better for you.

Make sure you also get your background color and text color right. Because you still want your text to be easily readable on your certificate design.

Stick to certain fonts

Fonts are the next piece of the puzzle when it comes to any design beyond certificates. Again, if you have already set the fonts for your online school brand, you can stick to those.

But if you are picky like me and it could take you an hour or so to find the perfect match, here are a few things to consider.

  • If you want the design to look professional, make sure you achieve contrast. You can achieve that with colors, spacing, size, and style. For example, you would see most certificates use this thick, bold font with thin and long ones, like in the example below.

  • As you can see, you can totally mix the fonts for the contrast. But at least try to use fonts that come from the same family
  • A rule of thumb would be mixing 2-3 fonts. So, you can have one for the heading, one for the body text, and another for the student’s name.

What are the most popular fonts for the certificates?

You can usually use both serif fonts and sans serif fonts for the certificates. And here are a few popular ones you can try for contrast.

  • If you want something more academic and formal, you can try: Times New Roman, Baskerville, Garamond, Roboto Slab.
  • For an elegant and handwritten style, you can try: Great Vibes, Lucida Calligraphy, Edwardian Script.
  • For a more corporate and clean look, you can consider: Helvetica Neue, Raleway, Roboto.

Consider the sizes and layouts

Now, think about how you want to organize the visual elements of your certificate. Like where to place the logo, course title, student name, completion date, and signatures. A layout is simply the arrangement of all these elements on your certificate. It affects how professional, clear, and balanced the certificate looks.

To have that clean and professional layout, the sizes matter a lot. Considering that students usually need the certificate as an A4 document (210 x 297 mm or 8.27 x 11.69 inches), here are the sizes using points (pt) for the measurements.

  • Title of the certificate 15-30 points
  • Students’ name 30-50 points
  • Details and the context of 15 points
  • Dates, signatures, and your branding elements are about 10-25 points

The key here is to make sure you have enough white spaces and not cluttered elements like in the example below

Include your school branding

As our initial goal was to create a certificate that differs and not use just another template, you want to make sure that your course branding is present. Which is beyond just choosing the colors we did above.

This includes using your logo, of course, but also your brand fonts, any specific icons or visual elements you consistently use (like a badge or stamp), and a tone of voice that matches how your brand speaks.

And if your brand uses a certain style of borders, shapes, or watermark-style backgrounds, include those too.

In case of logo creation, using a top logo maker can help ensure your branding remains consistent and visually polished across all certificate elements.

Fill in your content

Last but not least, let’s see what key information your certificate shall have.

Here is just an example, but it depends on the type of certificate you create, too.

  • Certificate title, like Certificate of CompletionCertificate of Achievement, or the type you want to pursue.
  • Award statement. This is the core sentence that explains what the certificate is for.
This is to certify that [Student Name] has successfully completed the course [Course Name].
  • Details of the course. For example, you can include a line about what the course covered or the skills learned, especially if it adds credibility.
  • Student’s name in the center
  • Date of completion. This can be written as Awarded on April 15, 2025 or Completed on…, depending on your tone.
  • Instructor signature with name, title, and a scanned signature or digital stamp.

Also, if you want to make the certificate more credible, you can include a certificate ID, course duration, or a note about accreditation.

How to create online course completion certificates with Uteach

As I mentioned earlier, it is always better when you can generate a certificate and award it automatically. And the best part is, you do not have to fill in every student’s name manually or send them via email one by one.

This is how you can create and manage certificates with Uteach. You can watch this quick tutorial on creating a certificate of completion, or just follow these steps for more detail.

How to design a course certificate on Uteach

To generate a course certificate with Uteach, navigate to the Teaching Materials section on the dashboard and choose Certificates. You can create certificates true to your brand in a few minutes.

There is an opportunity to select one of the ready-made templates or upload your own design.

And then you will be ready to upload your logo, signature, stamp, and fill in the details of the certificate.

At this point, there is no need to write any names, because the system generates for all your course students automatically.

The best part of making your certificates with Uteach is that you can also

  • generate the QR code, which will be different for each student.
  • activate the social sharing buttons for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Reddit.

How to send course certificates automatically

Now, the most interesting part is how your student can receive certificates automatically.

To achieve that, you should attach the certificate to the final quiz.

Navigate to your course builder and select the Quiz and Certificate section. Once you select the final quiz and set the terms (such as the completion score and how many times they can pass it), you can choose the necessary certificate from below.

So now, when they successfully complete the quiz, they will receive the certificate automatically. They can access it through their learning portals and download it as PDF files.

FAQ

  • Why offer online course completion certificates?

Offering course completion certificates is more than just a nice touch at the end of your program. It gives your students something tangible to show for their effort. When someone finishes your course, they have invested time, energy, and probably some money too.

From your perspective as a course creator, certificates also add value to your offer. When potential students see that your course includes a certificate, it instantly looks more professional and complete. It shows that your course is structured, has clear outcomes, and ends with something they can share. That certificate could end up on a LinkedIn profile, inside a portfolio, or even printed and framed. Each time that happens, your course and your brand travel with it.

There is also the motivation factor. When learners know there is a certificate waiting at the finish line, they are more likely to complete the course. It creates a sense of achievement to work toward. Plus, it makes your course feel more official.

  • Shall my course certificates be accredited?

The short answer is: not necessarily, but it depends on your goals and your audience.

If you are teaching a course that helps people get into a regulated profession, like healthcare, accounting, or law, then accreditation might be essential. Learners in those fields often need proof from an official body that their course meets certain standards. In that case, having your certificate accredited gives it weight and opens doors for your students.

But if your course is about skills development, like digital marketing, photography, writing, wellness, or entrepreneurship, then accreditation is not always expected.

Many learners take these courses to gain practical knowledge they can apply right away. In these cases, your certificate still holds value, especially if your name or your brand is trusted in your niche.

So no, your certificates do not have to be accredited to be meaningful. What matters most is that your course delivers real value and the certificate reflects that.
